Field Maple is a pretty, medium sized deciduous tree often seen forming parts of hedgerows although it makes a good small specimen tree too. The five-lobed leaves turn bright yellow in autumn and may be flushed red. The miniature sycamore-type winged seed are quite often pink too, before they ripen.  When young this tree will tolerate quite deep shade, but requires more light to flower and fruit. Insect friendly

About the Field Maple

The Field Maple is the UK’s only native maple. This compact, rounded tree features attractive, five-lobed leaves that turn a striking golden yellow in autumn. Its timber is the hardest and densest of all European maples, making it highly valued. Additionally, it’s an excellent choice for hedging. In ancient times, druids revered the Field Maple for its magical transformation from silver to gold, referring to it as “sunshine fire.”

Estimated Growth and Size

  • Maximum Height: Typically up to 20 metres, though often smaller.
  • Growth Rate: Approximately 40–60 cm per year.

Purchase Size and Growth

  • These saplings are cell-grown and range between 15 cm and 60 cm in height.
  • Cell-grown trees can be planted year-round, provided they are cared for properly.
  • Note: Saplings, particularly those delivered in early spring, may not look their best on arrival. Once planted, they generally establish quickly.

Wildlife Value

The Field Maple is a fantastic addition to any wildlife-friendly garden.

  • Attracts Beneficial Insects: Loved by aphids, which in turn attract predators like ladybirds, hoverflies, and birds.
  • Supports Moths: The leaves are a food source for caterpillars of several moth species, including the sycamore moth, mocha, maple pug, small yellow wave, and others.
  • Pollinator Support: Its flowers provide nectar and pollen for bees and birds.
  • Food for Mammals: Small mammals enjoy the fruits.

Soil and Growing Conditions

Field Maple thrives in most soil types but struggles in highly waterlogged areas.

UK and Ireland Sourced and Grown (UKISG)

Our saplings are sourced and grown entirely within the UK to reduce the risk of introducing tree pests and diseases. All seeds are collected and stored locally, with tracking systems in place for each individual tree.

Sustainability Note:
The saplings are bundled and wrapped in recyclable LDPE (low-density polyethylene). We encourage you to recycle the plastic once your trees are ready to plant.
